TYNE TOUR 2016

Postby Conor Parkes » Wed Oct 19, 2016 2:53 pm

With only just over two weeks until Tyne Tour, here's some more info to keep people up to date with one highlights of our calendar...

What?
What better way to celebrate the opening of the kayaking season? Originally set up to celebrate the access to the river Tyne (hence the name), the event is run by British Canoeing and is attended by most of the Northern British Universities. It's a celebration of all things kayaking! But the social parts are best....

When?
4th, 5th and 6th of November

How does this thing work?
We're hitting it hard from the word go! Leaving on transport at various points throughout the afternoon on the 4th wearing fancy dress chosen by the drivers, we head to Hexham Green where we pitch camp for the night.

After the admin is done, we head into town (10 min walk) and get some scoff at the spoons and start consuming a few beverages. From there, more beverages are consumed and we hit it hard in the best (and only) club in Hexham! Then back to a tent and up on Saturday morning, fresh faced and raring to go in the warming November sunshine (no guarantees). Half of the group will load up and head off boating, leaving the other half to wonder and ponder what they actually did/saw the night before.

The paddling happens on the North Tyne and Tyne. It's mostly all grade 1/2, so nothing beyond the less experienced boaters! There is also a stretch of more difficult rapis towards the end, but it's nothing to worry about!

After wearing off the ailments of the night before, it's back on it again! Into the leisure centre for a Ceilidh (a Scottish barn dance thing, lots of swinging, clapping etc) where we also see some cracking fire works!

Sunday works in a similar way to the Saturday, but the other half paddles instead!

Accommodation?
Look, we're at University in the North, it was always going to be a little bit cooler than the softy south. We'll be camping in Hexham Green, so keep an eye out for the tent topic coming up soon to find your spooning partners to keep you warm. Bring plenty of sleeping bags/blankets/warm clothing.

Showers and Toilets will be onsite, but who needs those (showers)? The essentials can be purchased in the nearby Tesco. The club will provide breakfast on both mornings, as a liquid diet will not keep you energised for the two days!

Costs
All of the costs (transport, kit hire, tickets, Ceilidh, Breakfast and fun) come to a mere £43! A good price for an action packed weekend. You must be a member of the club to attend.

Get your tickets here!!
https://www.luu.org.uk/groups/canoe/

All abilities are welcome, the aim of this weekend is a fun, social event, so get those tickets!

T-Shirts
Fancy dabbling in clothing design? That's right, we run a competition to get your T-Shirt design, we decide on a winner and then they get printed! T-shirts can be purchased closer to the event, and if you win, you get a free one!

Thanks to Kirsty, who wrote a similar post last year, and I who I've basically just paraphrased. Academic Integrity and all that!

Anymore questions? Don't hesitate to get in contact by any means possible!

Tyne tour is an amazing weekend! It's not to be missed.

My 2 pence is: don't let the idea of camping put you off. Being in a tent with other people will keep you lovely and warm.

Just hide it behind a cushion and don't try to stand up, that usually works.
