National Student Rodeo 2012!

Postby Beth » Wed Jan 25, 2012 5:39 pm

So it is time for the one you’ve been talking about, the big one, the one you’ve all be waiting for.....

The NATIONAL STUDENT RODEO!!

What is the National Student Rodeo?
It is the biggest student kayaking event in the UK and arguably in the world. 1,000 student from Universities all over the UK descent on Holme Pierrepont in Nottingham to take part in the event which consists of a freestyle kayaking competition by day and the most mental party you have ever been to by night!

Freestyle kayaking… What is that then?
Freestyle is all about doing tricks whilst surfing on a wave. From “old skool” moves such as paddle spins, air guitar and the Harry Potter (invented at NSR 07, see Harry Potter) to “new skool” moves where people aim to get as much air as possible! Freestyle at the Rodeo is all about entertainment and inventive moves!

But I’ve only been kayaking a year and this all sounds a bit hard for me….
Not at all! NSR is focussed around beginners! There are beginner, intermediate and expert categories for the boys and novice and advanced for the girls. Beginners will get points for “crowd pleasing moves” such as standing up in their kayaking, throwing things at the judges, drinking a beer whilst kayaking and fancy dress – anything which is original basically so get your thinking caps on!
Also, the Rodeo aims to encourage more people into kayaking and all the BEST prizes go to the beginners. Just ask Merriman, who won a set of paddles, and Katy, who won a helmet amongst other things.

So what about this party then?
The party side is organised by River Legacy and is held in a big marquee on a football field. There are cheap drinks and awesome music provided by Extreme Events. There will be parties on both the Friday and Saturday nights, although the Saturday night is the big one and is JUNGLE themed fancy dress! So get out your tiger onesies, catsuits and Mowgli costumes and get ready to dance the night away in true LUUCC style!
Still not convinced it’ll be the most amazing and mental night ever? Well think of an LUUCC social and then imagine that but with 1000 kayakers, all with the same mindset and party attitude as us!

Who organises this amazing event then?
We do! Jake and Ben and myself have put in some hours already to make sure this will be the most epic, incredible and outrageous weekend of your year, and now it is up to all of us! The event is a Leeds legacy and being the organisers is so rewarding and one of the best things about the event. Whether you pull people out of the water as part of our Safety Team, patch up their whingeries on the First Aid Team (NB. 1st aid qualification will be required for this), make everyone’s day by keeping them fed and watered on Team Tasty, keep note of the extreme Pole dancing scores on our running team or enter them onto our scoring system with Tom's Techy Team, or just do a bit of everything, getting involved will be so much fun and so rewarding!
To thank you all for helping out and continuing the legacy of the event you will get highly subsidised transport to the event and a free t-shirt. You maybe even get a cheeky beer token or 2 and if you really go above and beyond then your team leader may nominate you to receive a prize at the end of the weekend!

When is it?
2nd – 4th March.
Get it in your diary!

And how much will this set me back?
There are various options for the weekend.
Camping + Party + 1 Event will cost £43.
Camping + Party will cost £41.
A hoodie will cost £20.
A t-shirt will cost £10.

When signing up, please enter the K1 event. Although there is an option not to compete, it is tradition that everyone from LUUCC does! It’s really really good fun, you have the opportunity to win amazing prizes, and you will win points for the University and put us in a good position to win a brand new boat for the club!!

That seems like a lot of money. Where does it go?
It may seem like a lot but really it isn’t. This money gets you transport to and from the event, camping for 2 nights, a 2 course meal on the Saturday night, entrance into the competition which gives you at least 2 opportunities to kayak and show off some amazing moves, a specific Leeds t-shirt which will be a different colour to the one we’re selling, a kayaking film premiere (hopefully) and entrance into the awesome party on both the Friday and Saturday night.
The event is not for profit. All bar proceeds are used by River Legacy to go towards charitable kayaking projects, and LUUCC make no money on this. We do it as a labour of love and to continue the legacy it has become!

Ok, I’m convinced. How do I sign up?
Sign up will go up at the helpdesk and the union website. You will need to specify which competitions you would like to enter. If you don’t really know better then go for the K1 event!

Sign up will close on Friday 10th Feb, don’t miss out!

If you want to know more about the event or still need convincing, we will be showing the NSR 2011 film, made by our very own Max Bilbow and Adam Webster, on Wednesday 1st February at 8pm in the Parkinson building room B.09. The film will give you a great impression of the atmosphere and scale of the event. We’ll also have a quick chat about it and answer any questions you may have!
This really is one not to miss, you will definitely regret it when you hear us all raving about it afterwards! Plus, Leeds must dominate, so we need to take the biggest group possible!

This really is the weekend to end all weekend guys.

Last year, we dominated by taking 90 people... let' see if we can top that.

I am so excited.

Someone official please make this an announcement. Also, if you could put a copy of it into the actual Announcements as well that would be awesome :-)

All volunteering opportunities are under the "jobs" section of the NSR forum: http://luucc.liquidsatisfaction.com/for ... m.php?f=10

Please take the word "job" with a pinch of salt, it's really not hard work, we're just asking you to volunteer for a bit during the weekend to help the event run smoothly. It's definitely a lot of fun!

Sign up is now live! You can sign up on the union website here (yes I know the blurb is currently lakes weekend and the date is wrong, that should be being changed as we speak) or at the Union helpdesk.

Remember - please compete! It's really really good fun, you'll get points for fancy dress and imagination if you're a beginner, and you'll win points for LUUCC so we can hopefully bring home a brand new boat!

Any questions/concerns etc will be answered tomorrow at the showing of the amazing 2011 NSR film, made by our very own Max Bilbow and Adam Webster. It would be great to see all of you there! :D

I have nominated LUUCC to be the potential winners of Most Naked Uni 2012. There is apparently a trophy and everything. Don't let me down!

Also, if anyone would like to enter C1, Squirt or divorce boat please post on here. They will be £6 per event (divorce boat is £6 per divorce boat, so £3 each).

There is also the option to purchase beer and a burger on Friday night. It will be the bargain price of £5. You can pre order this, hopefully soon through the Union sign up, but as that is likely not to happen, again please post on here if you'd like it.

There will be a limited amount that will be sold on a 1st come 1st served basis on the night. But to avoid disappointment I would pre order if you want it!

Beer and burger please.

Also the union site seems to be getting annoyed at me trying to buy an NSR ticket...says I have to buy something else first and then gives you a massive list of random events and giags..?
A bit special

Anyone who would like beer and a burger needs to give me £5. Please make sure you give it to me or Ben only otherwise you've just wasted £5.

Also, would be great to see some Leeds people in the divorce boat competition, who fancies it?

Deadline for Beer and Burger money is Monday 13th Feb, so get it to me at polo or the pool please!
